Submission to the Australian Government Department of Employment, Education and Training: 2020 review of the disability standards for education 2005

15 September 2020

The Australian Government Department of Employment, Education and Training called for submissions on the 2020 Review of the Disability Standards for Education 2005.

The National Mental Health Consumer & Carer Forum (NMHCCF) submitted a response to the call for submissions on 25 September 2020.

Reason for the submission

The purpose of this discussion paper is to support the Australian Government’s consultations for the 2020 Review of the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (Standards). The Standards have been developed to ensure that students with disability can access and participate in education on the same basis as students without disability.

The NMHCCF’s submission focused on the following key points:

  • Enrolment in education and training.
  • Participation in education and training among students with disability.
  • Support for students with disability.
  • Harassment and victimisation of students with disability.
  • Compliance with the Standards by education providers.
  • Community awareness of the Standards.
  • Opportunities to improve the Standards.
