Easy Read: NMHCCF Position Statement on the Disability Royal Commission Final Report

About this Statement

This statement is by the National Mental Health Consumer and Carer Forum. We are called the NMHCCF for short.

This sheet is about the Disability Royal Commission Final Report.

We explain:

  • which parts we agree with,
  • what is missing from the Final Report.

This is an Easy Read summary. It explains the main ideas.

About the Final Report

The Disability Royal Commission was about how people with disability experience:

  • violence,
  • abuse,
  • neglect.

Many people shared stories about the problems they experience.

At the end of the Commission Government wrote a Final Report.

The Final Report tells us:

  • what people said about the problems,
  • how we can make things better for people with disability.

Summary

We welcomed the Disability Royal Commission Final Report in 2023.

In general we agree with the recommendations in the Final Report.

Recommendations are important things that need to happen next.

These things will help to make life better for people with disability.

We look forward to working on this with:

  • governments,
  • people with disability and carers.

But we say the Report does not talk about the needs of people with psychosocial disability.

Psychosocial disability is when a person has a disability because of their mental health.

Psychosocial disability is different to other kinds of disability. It needs a different approach.

People with psychosocial disability need different support. This support must:

  • fit the needs of the person,
  • help the person get better and feel well again.
