'Psychosocial Disability' and 'Complex Mental Health':
A Co-Design Perspective
Wednesday 11 June 2025, 12.30-1.30pm AEST via Zoom
The National Mental Health Consumer and Carer Forum (NMHCCF) hosted a webinar titled 'Psychosocial Disability' and 'Complex Mental Health': A Co-Design Perspective.
181 attendees joined us for an engaging and insightful webinar where we explored:
- Distinguishing psychosocial disability from complex mental health, and why the psychosocial disability sector is now the key policy space due to the failures of the mental health system.
- Determining the systemic gaps and providing practical approaches to co-design psychosocial supports, guided by lived experience perspectives.
- Pivoting out of the medical model and into a rights-based social and relational model of care in a mindful manner, one that is led by lived experience.
Guest panellists included:
- Helen Day – Consumer Perspective
- Carolyn Nikoloski – CEO, Mental Health Australia
- Terri Warner – Lived Experience (Consumer Perspective) Researcher, Educator, and Advocate
- Cathy O’Toole – President, Community Mental Health Australia
- Alex Li – Carer Perspective
- Leilani Darwin – Owner and Founder, First Nations Co.
The webinar attracted 431 registrations, with 54.5% of these identified as someone with a mental health Lived Experience. Of these, 65.1% identified as consumers and 34.9% identified as carers. There was a wide showing across Australia, as well as a large representation of sectors, with:
