Submission to The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners on its Draft Standards for Health Services in Australian Prisons

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) called for submissions on its draft Standards for health services in Australian prisons (second edition) (Prison Standards) for consultation.

The National Mental Health Consumer & Carer Forum (NMHCCF) submitted a response to the call for submissions on 21 July 2020.

Reason for the submission

The draft RACGP Prison Standards (second edition) were developed to support health professionals and their employer organisations in their endeavours to provide high quality care to people in Australian prisons.

The NMHCCF’s submission focused on the following key points:

  • Key areas of mental health which can be considered as guiding principles and include: mental health of prisoners in Australia; the mental health challenges for people in prison and their families; person-centred care; and some specific comments related to the draft Standards.
