The Australian Government Department of Social Services called for submissions on the new National Disability Strategy.
The National Mental Health Consumer & Carer Forum (NMHCCF) submitted a response to the call for submissions on 30 October 2020.
Reason for the submission
A new National Disability Strategy (NDS) position paper proposes ways in which a new NDS can build and improve on the current NDS. This includes commitments to better public reporting to show whether outcomes for people with disability are improving, and a strengthened approach to implementation through targeted plans for action.
The NMHCCF’s submission focused on the following key points:
- Responded to the questions in the Consultation Paper from a perspective of people with psychosocial disability and the perspective of their carers/family.
- Supported that the NDS should require all levels of staff working with people with disabilities to have trauma informed care and practice training and also that the NDS acknowledges the expertise and leadership skills of people with lived experience of disability, and their family and carers, in developing, implementing and monitoring the NDS.
