People with a mental illness are significantly more likely to smoke tobacco than the general population; an estimated 32% of people with a mental illness smoke tobacco compared to 18% of the general Australian population and those diagnosed with schizophrenia have smoking rates over 60%. Australian research reports the rate of smoking tobacco as 73% in males and 56% of females with a chronic psychiatric illness.
