About
On 30 October 2024, from 12.00-1.00pm AEST, the National Mental Health Consumer and Carer Forum (NMHCCF) held an hour-long Zoom webinar on the sexual safety of consumers in mental health inpatient units. The Advocacy Working Group of the NMHCCF hosted a conversation with three high-profile panellists on the topic, as research identifies mental health inpatient units as high-risk environments for breaches of sexual safety.
In its advocacy brief, the NMHCCF calls for a rights-based approach, mandatory staff training, standardised national guidelines, and more accessible information in relation to the sexual safety of those in mental health inpatient units. This signifies alignment with the recommendations made by all three of the prominent panellists. The NMHCCF published its advocacy brief in September 2024, with 8 recommendations made to both state and federal governments. You can read the NMHCCF’s full advocacy brief here: Sexual Safety of Consumers in Mental Health Inpatient Units.
